The Treaty of Lisbon is an international agreement that was signed in 2007 and came into force in 2009. It amended the two main treaties that form the constitutional basis of the European Union, the Treaty on European Union and the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. The Treaty of Lisbon aimed to streamline decision-making processes within the EU, enhance the role of national parliaments, and increase the efficiency and transparency of the EU institutions. It also expanded the areas in which the EU can make decisions through qualified majority voting, rather than unanimous agreement among member states. **
